Rotary Central Cayman Island’s 19th Annual Bill Hrudey Science Fair

Initiated by Cayman’s legendary scientist and former Rotary Central member Dr. Bill Hrudey in 2007, Rotary Central’s Science Fair is an annual event designed to foster and encourage our students’ interest in science and technology, the scientific method of analysis and problem solving, and the sense of accomplishment and discovery that comes from researching, preparing, and presenting a science project.
The Science Fair, financially supported by Rotary Central and various corporate sponsors, has grown exponentially in popularity over the years.
On Saturday, April 5th, at Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Centre, the 19th Annual Bill Hrudey Science Fair was a massive success. It featured a record total of 97 registered projects spanning the scientific disciplines of earth sciences, food and health, life sciences, physics, chemistry, and computer science.
While announcing the official opening of the Science Fair, Rotary Central’s President, Brendan Lee, said, “Science is more than just theories and formulas—it is the key to solving global challenges and improving lives. Here in the Cayman Islands, we recognize the importance of nurturing scientific talent, and we are committed to creating opportunities that empower our youth to think critically, solve problems, and drive meaningful change.”
This year’s Science Fair saw participation from over 130 students across 15 local public and private schools, several homeschooled students, and nine projects from schools in Cayman Brac. The ages of the students competing ranged from 5 to 17.
The awards banquet was held on Saturday evening and attended by approximately 170 participants and guests. An inspiring keynote speech was delivered by former Dr. Bill Hrudey, a Science Fair winner and now one of our experienced event judges, Chynna Retumban. Ms. Retumban is a Molecular Biologist with the Cayman Islands Health Services Authority. Cash prizes totalling over $18,000.00 were awarded to the 1st 2nd and 3rd place winners in each of the four categories, as well as two special prizes for young scientists in the under-6 and nine to 7 age groups.
The continued success of the Dr. Bill Hrudey Science Fair would not be possible without our hard- working team of Rotary Central members, a dedicated group of approximately 20 volunteer judges from the local community and the support of our corporate sponsors – Dart Minds Inspired, Health City Cayman Islands, and Consolidated Water. We also wish to thank all the school science teachers, parents and, of course, the participating students.
